Positive Mental Health

Q&A with Jan de Vries

Renowned naturopath and health guru Jan de Vries answers your health questions on homeopathic remedies for common complaints:

Q My partner suffers very bad sweating during the night. He has to change his pyjama top usually three times during the night. He has been to various doctors who have checked his thyroid etc but can’t seem to get to the cause of the problem. He does suffer from sleep apnoea but has a breathing appliance to counteract this. Can you suggest what might be wrong please?

A I would assume that your husband has had tests to find out if there are any serious underlying causes for his sweating. If these have come back clear then I would suggest using a remedy called Sage, which is very helpful in cases of excessive sweating. Milk Thistle would also be of help to support and cleanse his liver, and I would also recommend he reduces his intake of salt.

Q Can you kindly help me as I am having dizzy spells on a daily basis? I am also experiencing a stiff neck and shoulders and my eyes seem to cloud over. Hope you can help.

A The dizziness could be due to a restricted blood supply brought on by inflammation in the neck and shoulders. To help reduce this inflammation I would suggest making an appointment with a qualified acupuncturist or osteopath and take the remedy Celadrin. This is a fatty acid complex, which has been shown to be particularly helpful in cases of degenerative arthritis and soft tissue inflammation. Celadrin can be taken very simply at a dose of 3 capsules, a day. This is best taken around meal times. There are no known adverse reactions or drug interactions using Celadrin and other medication. As for the dizziness, you could try Ginkgo Biloba to help improve blood flow to the head and inner ear. This is a safe remedy for long term use but is not recommended alongside blood thinners such as aspirin or Warfarin.

Q Recently I have developed a problem with my nails. Part of the white tips have become streaky and have run in thin streaks into the pink part of the nail. Parts of the nails have turned a yellow/brown colour in the middle of the nails as if the nails are dying. They are also breaking about half way down leaving only half a nail. I don’t eat a lot of dairy so do you think I may need a calcium supplement? Perhaps you could advise me.

A It may benefit you to take Urticalcin, a homeopathic supplement to help with calcium absorption. A dose of 5 tablets sucked and allowed to dissolve in the mouth, twice daily would be appropriate. I would also recommend applying Propolis N to the nails daily to help with any nail infection that may be present.
