Scotland’s Natural Produce

There is a dichotomy in Scotland between the wonderful natural produce available to us to form a healthy and tasty diet and the levels of obesity and heart disease seen in the country.

With such a rich natural larder at our disposal, it seems only right that Scots should be encouraged to use it. Eating local natural produce is a much healthier way of eating in all ways - the actual food is healthy but you are also reducing food miles and by eating organically, helping the environment in that way too.

Scotland’s natural larder is almost unique in that we produce a huge variety of food from land and from sea. From best Aberdeen Angus beef to succulent venison, from fresh fruit to the delicious delights the seas and rivers have to offer, there is a huge wealth of sumptuous and healthy food of the highest quality and all on our doorstep.

No matter where in Scotland you live, you can find a local delicacy to delight the tastebuds - Arbroath smokies, Loch Fyne kippers, Selkirk bannocks, Orkney cheese, berries from Fife and asparagus from Perthshire to name but a few.

Access to all this produce is simple really – organic box schemes, local farm shops, farmers markets or even your own garden are all options. The main thing is to switch your buying and eating habits and experience eating healthily in Scotland on Scottish food. A Scottish diet could so easily be a healthy one.

Berries for health
Scottish strawberries are available right up until September and they not only taste delicious – they are good for you too!
There is more Vitamin C in 8 strawberries than in an orange and strawberries are high in folic acid. The antioxidant properties from components such as flavinoids in soft fruit in general have considerable health benefits, and a higher consumption could reduce the risk of heart disease.

It is claimed that strawberries can even alleviate sunburn, blisters and blemishes on the face. Slice them in half and place on the problem areas for 10 minutes or so.
