Beetroot is good for you!

Beetroot is another one of those ‘superfoods’, Recent studies show it can lower blood pressure, but it’s health giving properties are almost endless. It has a higher natural sugar content than most vegetables and is rich in potassium, fibre and folate. Just 100g of beetroot simmered in its own juice can provide 150mg of folate, which is 75% of an adult’s recommended level. Folate is vital for normal foetal development and is thought to support heart health.

The leafy tops are an excellent source of beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant and skin protector. Beetroot contains soluble fibre, which has been shown in some studies to reduce blood cholesterol.

Beetroot also contains carotenoids and flavonoids, which are believed to help prevent LDL (‘bad’ cholesterol) from being oxidised by free radicals and deposited in the arteries. This may explain why people who eat a lot of colourful fruit and vegetables tend to have a lower risk of heart disease. Beetroot is virtually fat-free and low in calories. Although it has a ‘medium’ GI (Glycaemic Index) of 64, it has an extremely low GL (Glycaemic Load) of 2.9 which means it’s converted into sugars very slowly and therefore helps to keep blood sugar levels stable – which is good for mood and energy levels.
