Keep fit this winter
There is a tendency among many of us to ditch the exercise regime come winter, especially if we have been exercising out of doors. The excuses are easy to find – it’s dark, it’s cold, it’s wet etc. We can also find excuses not to exercise indoors although these are never quite as good.

Head for the mountains on a bike!
Mountain biking is said to be one of the most exciting, exhilarating sports in the world and it is really taking off as a fitness sport in Scotland. There has never been a more exciting time than now to enjoy this adventure sport in Scotland. Stop moaning and start toning
We have all been there, day dreaming of that amazing bikini body, those sun kissed toned legs parading round the pool with a mass of admirers without a care in the world…then…BANG! back to reality, “I’ve left it too late to look good for summer again”, “I wish I hadn’t packed in that gym membership” (even though you never used it) and that guilty feeling of only using that step machine you bought a couple of times before banishing it to the garage!

Take to the hills
You don’t have to head outdoors and up hills to get fit but there is something about the fresh air and countryside that adds to the whole experience of exercise – it’s a workout for the mind as well as the body. In fact many hill walkers are not walking in order to exercise but in order to experience the great outdoors and get away from the rat race.

As stated, it is the season of the big sporting events – particularly charity events that involve running or walking. Scotland has many from the Great Scottish Walk where you can choose the charity of your choice to walk for to The Moonwalk which is specifically for breast cancer.

Climb to fitness
We are always looking for new and different ways to get ourselves fit and one of the latest and increasingly popular trends is to take up rock climbing. This may well have to do with the growing number of indoor climbing walls as it does tend to be the hardier and more dedicated types that head outdoors for the sport.

As a child I was taken hill walking on a regular basis and as a teenager was completely put off the activity, but I am once more an avid fan and I think all those mountains I was coaxed up as a child, have ultimately provided me with a love of all things outdoor and of the wonder of the hills.
