The gentle effect of Bowen Therapy

Camilla Brinton has been working as a therapist at Napiers Clinic in Stockbridge and has recently qualified as a Bowen Therapist. She explains how the treatment works:

I have been a practicing therapist for over 10 years and of course get my fair share of aches and pains. I had been suffering shoulder pain over a period of 3 years and had tried everything from osteopathy to acupuncture, although I got some short term relief none of it was longstanding. I came across Bowen in 2005 and had two treatments on my shoulder, the pain disappeared with a few days and has never returned! I was so impressed that I was determined to train in this dynamic therapy so others could benefit as I had. I qualified as a Bowen Therapist in November 2006 and have already had some extremely positive results ranging from improving neck, back and shoulder restrictions to asthma in small children.

Bowen Therapy is a gentle yet powerful complementary therapy which uses a series of precise soft tissue moves performed over muscles, tendons and ligaments. These moves stimulate energy flow which releases tension and strain empowering the body’s own resources to naturally reset and heal its self. There are frequent but very essential pauses throughout the session that allow the body time to respond and begin the healing process. Bowen does not use forceful manipulation. The practitioner uses a unique “tissue tension sense” in order to discern stress build up in the muscles and other soft tissues enabling them to perform specific moves to assist recovery.

This technique is so gentle that it can be performed on anyone from newborn babies, pregnant women and the very elderly.

It is non invasive and can be done through light clothing, seated if necessary. It can assist recovery from many conditions from traumatic injury to chronic illness:

• Back pain & sciatica
• IBS, Digestive and bowel problems
• Earache, ear infections & migraines
• Fibromyalgia, ME
• Knee, ankle & foot problems
• PMT/Hormonal Balance
• Neck & shoulder problems
• Groin pain, pelvic tilt
• Respiratory, asthma
• RSI, Carpel tunnel syndrome
• Sports and accident injuries
• Childhood conditions

What follows is just one endorsement of the technique:

Male, 52 years: “I fainted three years ago and hit my head leaving me with a constant dizzy feeling. I found Bowen by accident and since then have never looked back. After three treatments the dizzy feeling had almost gone and other problems I didn’t realize I had, corrected themselves. “Bowen technique has provide a most welcome relief, patches of light through the cloud.”
